Back History

Summer 2012

It was in 2012 that I, Vasily, first thought about making games like these. A bit of googling led me to a site about URQ, an easy language written here at home. And so, without thinking too long about it, I set out to make an amateur mini-game: "Crisis in the Kremlin: Fall of the Empire".

July 2012

And so, on 12 July, my very first idea came out. Back then the game held nothing but figures — Gorbachev among them, his strength and his standing in the Party — and a great many events of 1985–91 that you answered by picking one of two to five options.

August 2012

In August 2012, along with a new version that added a choice of starting date and of the line the rule began on, the game got a site of its own on narod.ru. It no longer works.

November 2012

November 2012 brought a version with a Council of Ministers — which, admittedly, you could only reshuffle from 1989 onwards — as well as Doctrines and the KGB, with which the seceded republics could be brought back (and with the Ministry of Defence you could attack the whole world, even the United States).

2013

At the beginning of 2013 I stopped work on the game for a couple of months. By September, though, I was back at it, and the game had gained difficulty levels, a prototype economy, a wider and freer Council of Ministers, wider doctrines, and a span extended to the year 2000. That is when the choice of starting rulers appeared.

2014–2015

In 2014 our team began to come together, we left the old programming language behind, built our own site at kremlingames.com, and the game gained new ministers, new doctrines and a better economy, while the emphasis moved from a hot war to a cold one — by giving up military invasions. The idea, though, and the mechanics as such were left unchanged. Every few months an early version came out with new improvements, refinements and events.

2016

The new year was marked by the move to Unity, and by new pieces of mechanics — diplomacy, an economy wider still, non-linearity and other novelties that are appearing before your eyes.
